The Big Black Machine got word that one of our high school alumnus,
Troy Dixon, was doing a comedy show at
The Comedy Bar. (945 Bloor St. W) So myself, the Big Black Machine and The Tazemaster went down to see him and 9 other comics in a show called, "Perfect 10". It was basically 10 comics, for $10.
When we arrived, the place was packed. The show was supposed to start around 10pm, but it was delayed and started around 10:30pm or so. The show was actually SOLD OUT, but we managed to get in. We had to stand at the back of the theatre for the whole show. It wasn't so bad, we leaned on a wall. The theatre holds about 100 people, so there were about 120 people crammed in there. The first comedian to warm up the crowd looked like a poor man's Conan O'Brien. He was quite funny and did a bit on facebook and people with red hair. He got the crowd going. After him was a comedian that usually does improv, or so I'm told. His name was Makesi Arthur. His set was bombing really bad. About 10 people got up and left in disgust. I felt sorry for him, but maybe his material wasn't what this audience was into.
After him was Troy Dixon, the friend that invited us. He did a great act and had the crowd roaring again. His act was very visual as his facial expressions sold most of the jokes. After Troy was this juggernaut of rage, a comedian named Dave Meherje. He did a bit on Tim Horton's and was non-stop a bolt of energy from the start to the finish. He was great! Rodney Ramsey followed him, I think. I'm not sure about the order here now, but I think he was next. If he was the guy that moved from Montreal to Toronto, then he was funny. After him was a comic called Peter Lawrence. He was supposedly on the Buzz and other shows. He started with a few little jokes and then went into a very long bit that was pretty much how an old west indian uncle tells a story. Seriously! That was how it went!... and no, he was NOT impersonating an old west indian uncle!
After him was Daniel Woodrow -- who organized this event. I have to tell you, besides being mistaken for a Sideshow Bob lookalike, this guy was completely hilarious. His comedy is very observational about himself and things around him. I liked his humour. After him was Gilson Lubin of MTV Canada fame. I know Gilson is a really funny guy, but this particular show, something happened where he bombed the act on purpose. I'm not sure what happened. The guy standing beside me came with him and told me that Gilson was promised more time originally, but had to cut his act down, and that messed him up, so he bombed on purpose. I don't know.. I'll try and see Gilson at another show, because I know he's good! The last comic was Jon Steinberg. His comedy is amazingly similar to the style of Norm MacDonald. He was awkward funny, where he would say a joke... and 30 seconds later you are laughing at it. He would stay silent until people got it, or maybe he was just that delayed. He claimed to be quite baked at the time as well!
Well, that was the show! After the show, we got to take pics with some of the comics. Troy Dixon, Dave Meherje, Nathan MacIntosh and Daniel Woodrow were all willing to pose with us. After we got some pictures, we went outside and random people took pictures with us! The night was young, so we headed down to the Pauper's pub. We hung out there and watched the repeat of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey game. Once we had enough, we went across the street to Ghazale Shwarama and got... shwaramas to eat. From there, it was a long cold walk to the Blue Night bus stop. We walked to Bathurst and waited for a bus. It was quite packed but we managed to fit. We rode that to Yonge Street where we had to let 2 buses pass us because they were full. The next bus we forced our way on and made ourselves fit. The lack of buses made us want to DRIVE into the city next time!!
Overall, the comedy show was great! We look forward to more of these real soon!!
