cK At the Movies: May 15, 2009

CrazyKelvin kicks off the blockbuster movie season and reviews the sci-fi flick, Star Trek.

Welcome to the another edition of "CK At The Movies"! I'm your reviewer, CrazyK and today I will be reviewing "Star Trek".

STAR TREK:(2009)
Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana, Karl Urban, John Cho,
Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg

To this day, I have never watched the Star Trek tv show, watched any one of their movies or had the slightest interest in it. I never wanted to associate myself as a "trekkie" or get into debates which is better: Star Trek or Star Wars. I don't care -- however.... wow... after seeing this movie, I am thinking about reconsidering my disinterest with being a Trekkie!

This movie was a great ride from the start to finish. It's not what you might assume it is about based on the previous movies. I mean, all I know about Star Trek is the general stuff. There's a space ship that has a crew of maybe 5 or so. We've all seen the parodies so we have some idea of what each does. The main two characters are Captain Kirk and Spock. Well, that's where we begin. How did these guys start on this ship? How did they come to be? That's was this movies delves right into. The beginnings of the USS Enterprise, and I tell you its a great flick to watch.

Don't get me wrong, I won't run out and buy a book to learn to speak Klingon, however, I will now take more appreciation to the other series of Star Trek shows/movies because now I have an understanding of where the characters came from.

Trivia: The film's first normal US screenings were at 7 p.m. on May 7, 2009, grossing $4 million on its opening day. By the end of the weekend, Star Trek had opened with $79,204,289, as well as $35.5 million from other countries. Adjusted and unadjusted for inflation, it beat Star Trek: First Contact for the largest US opening for a Star Trek film. The film made $8.5 million from its IMAX screenings, breaking The Dark Knight's $6.3 million IMAX opening record.

MORE Trivia: The USS Kelvin, the ship Kirk's father serves on, is named after director, J. J. Abrams' grandfather, as well as the temperature scale Kelvin, itself named after physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin (William Thomson).
