cK Goes To Sauble Beach
cK AND D'ETTE VISIT SAUBLE BEACH & OWEN SOUND |
What started out to be a day at the beach turned out to be a road trip into one of Ontario's most beautiful destinations. D'ette and I left around 8am to start the 2.5 hour drive to Sauble Beach. There were lots of sights along the way; we saw windmills an rolling hills, little farms selling fresh pies and fruits. If we stopped at all of them, we'd never get to the beach! So we kept on going!
D'ette was the navigator as I didn't have any Ontario road maps, we were going by a planned out google maps route. Eventually we got into Owen Sound, not really a planned part of our destination, but it seemed like a nice place to drive through. We found the local tourist info office which was in the old Owen Sound CN Rail Station. That is where we met a nice lady that gave us free maps and info about the area. It was really fascinating! Beside the tourist office, was a railway museum. I figured if we went in there, we'd never get to the beach, so I postponed going there for another time. The nice tourist info lady told us about the abandoned Canadian Pacific Railway station on the other side of the harbour. So me and D'ette headed over there. Right in front of the station, along the water we had our little salad lunch. It was really nice and relaxing. The sun was out and shining bright, but it was still chilly.
We got back in the car an headed to the beach. On our exiting of Owen Sound, we passed by a drive-in movie theatre. We made plans to return there later in the evening after the beach. It wasn't much of a drive to the beach from Owen Sound. We arrived at Sauble Beach, under partly cloudy skies and a high temp of 22 degrees. It really wasn't a beach day, but we'll take that over a rained-out beach day!!
After finding some free parking on the street, we journeyed to the beach with our beach towels. We bought some burgers to eat once we found a spot. Once we found one, we set up our little blankets and sat down. Around us there were people throwing balls and bbq'ing. There were a lot of people in the water, even though we thought it must be freezing! In our beach towels and blankets we wrapped ourselves, took in the air and relaxed. We did that for a few hours and then went back to the car and put our stuff in it. We were so chilly we felt we needed something hot, so we stopped by this little cafe called AMICI (pronounced AH-ME-CHEE). D'ette made sure I got that right. We got 2 hot chocolates there and had them on the patio. That was really nice. After we were warmed up, we went back to the beach and took in the sunset that many have talked about. Along our walk to the beach, we saw lots of sand castles and strange sand art creations. One person made a shark, and what seems to be a guy holding a beer can. You can look at the pictures below to see what I mean. Anyways, the sunset was really beautiful, if it wasn't so chilly at that moment, I think we would have enjoyed it more. I'll remember to come a little eariler in the summer to Sauble Beach next year so I can really enjoy that sunset!
After the sunset, we headed back to the car and drove to Tim Horton's and bought some soup. Then went to the drive-in movie theatre where they were playing the Bourne Ultimatum and Chuck & Larry. We already saw the Bourne movie, but since its a double-feature, we saw it anyways. The Chuck & Larry movie was pretty funny, I know I enjoyed it. When the movie was over, I figured that driving 2.5 hours in night might be a little dangerous, so we slept by Owen Sound Harbour in the car until morning. We watched the sun rise the next day and had Tim Horton's for breakfast for our drive back home.
